Paint sealant is a liquid or semi-liquid product applied to the exterior surfaces of vehicles to provide a protective layer. It is designed to shield the paintwork from various environmental elements, such as UV rays, dirt, pollutants. A step up from normal Wax, a paint sealant offers longer durability and can be considered as best bargain when price and performance is to be compared.
A traditional wax is a natural substance. While paint sealant is a synthetic product. A wax offers lesser durability maximum upto 3 months if car is washed with pH neutral soap and sufficient care is taken. Whereas paint sealant offers durability upto 6 months. On the other hand ceramic coating is developed with the view that the necessity of frequently application of wax or sealant is eliminated so that gloss is retained for longer time and paint is protected. Hence ceramic coating is costly.
A good quality paint sealant provides high gloss, good water repellency, UV protection and protects paint from most of the normal contaminants. Its resistance to strong cleaners is limited. Hence it is a good balance between wax and ceramic coating when budget is an issue.
A sealant is generally available in the form of paste or sealant, similar to wax. Durability of products can be different. Spray form provides quick application and its an easy DIY product any car owner can have. Paste sealant takes time to apply and buff off as compared to spray sealant. A spray sealant is a good time saving and cost effective way of keeping car in good condition for long time. If your car is treated with any paint correction treatment (rubbing polishing, one step polish etc) applying sealant after washing is a good way to maintain the work done.
For a new car, if ceramic coating is not applied, one way to preserve slickness and gloss of the paint is to use spray/paste sealant periodically after washing.
